Laboratory of Analytical Human Biomonitoring

The Laboratory of Analytical Human Biomonitoring

The Laboratory of Analytical Human Biomonitoring (LAHB) Competence Center, within the Luxembourg Biomedical Research Resources (LBR2) at CRP-Santé is a shared core resource facility that is available to provide expertise in areas such as analytical toxicology, biomarker development, and therapeutic drug monitoring.

The primary research goals within the LAHB are the development of biomarkers for the identification of human exposure to pollutants (e.g., pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs], and persistent organic pollutants [POPs]), and expansion on existing knowledge of the relationships between exposure to pollutants and subsequent biological/biochemical disorders. Analytical techniques available at LAHB are based on chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry.

LAHB is recognized for its expertise in the fields of:

  • Human biomonitoring of environmental and occupational exposure
  • Alcohol consumption assessment
  • Smoking status assessment (active smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke)

LAHB provides assistance to researchers within CRP-Santé or to external (foreign) collaborators, particularly the provision of analyses within the framework of international epidemiological studies. Full support is available for results interpretation, study design and identification of suitable biomarkers.

The Laboratory of Analytical Human Biomonitoring

The Laboratory of Analytical Human Biomonitoring (LAHB), former Laboratory of Toxicology, is now integrated into the Technology Department/Luxembourg Biomedical Research Resources (LBR2) of CRP-Santé.

Fields of competences of LAHB cover analytical toxicology and development of biomarkers for the assessment of occupational and environmental exposure to organic pollutants and for therapeutic drug monitoring.Analytical techniques available at LAHB are based on chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry.

LAHB is under the coordination of Brice Appenzeller , PhD.

Dr. Appenzeller also holds positions as Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of Luxembourg; editorial board member of the Annales de Toxicologie Analytique (French); and reviewer for several peer-reviewed chemistry journals.

Dr. Appenzeller’s research has been widely published in high-impact, internationally recognized scientific journals. Dr Appenzeller is member of the administrative board of the Society of Hair Testing.

The Laboratory of Analytical Human Biomonitoring

LAHB actively acts as partner in charge of biological analyses in the framework of national and international epidemiological studies, and provides support for results interpretation, study design and identification of suitable biomarkers.

LAHB provides assistance to researchers within CRP-Santé or through external collaboration with foreign partners for the determination of chemicals (drugs, pollutants, metabolites, etc.) in biological matrices.

LAHB has a recognized expertise in the fields of:

  • Human Biomonitoring of environmental and occupational exposure
  • Alcohol consumption assessment
  • Smoking status assessment (active smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke)
