Prof. Stephen Senn

Head of Competence Center for Methodology and Statistics (CCMS)

If you had asked me a year ago, when I was still working as a Professor in Statistics at the University of Glasgow if I could imagine my future working in a research institute in Luxembourg, I would have had to say ‘no’. Such a thing is something I would never have thought of . However, when I was approached and given the brief for the post as Head of the Competence Centre in Methodology and Statistics then the more I looked at the job the more interesting it became.

It was clear from the beginning that the job would have one great plus: I would be plunged into an environment where I would be learning lots of new things, not only about statistics but also about medical research and epidemiology, not to mention French and German! However, a second advantage was that there would be a chance to make a positive contribution to the research of others not only by collaborating with medical researchers but also by sharing my experience in statistics with the members of my group.

I have really enjoyed my start here at CRP-Santé. The work has been varied and interesting and the atmosphere convivial. My colleagues have not only been tolerant but downright friendly! In consequence I have adapted very well. In fact I can honestly say that there is really only one disappointment. I have not discovered yet that the weather in Luxembourg is that much better than in Scotland!

I look forward with enthusiasm to future scientific challenges here at CRP-Santé.

After my PhD in Statistics, I was contacted by CRP Santé when CCMS was planned to be created. During the interview, it was explained that CRP Santé was building a competence center in statistics in Luxembourg aiming at supporting all its research units and performing high quality data analyses. I found especially attractive the possibility to work in a multidisciplinary framework with numerous fields of applications, ranging over a wide spectrum of public health problems like cancer, cardiology or immunology. Thus I wanted to be a part of it. Indeed, although I had succeeded in having an interesting position in a biotechnology laboratory, I had the feeling that I had reached a plateau. Therefore joining the team appeared to me as a perfect way to continue my professional development, especially because exploring new methodological designs are strongly encouraged. Prof Stephen Senn was also hired at the same period to manage the group, and I also wanted to profit from his advice. On the other hand, I wished to share my mathematical background with my new colleagues, hoping my former experience would benefit CRP Santé’s projects. In the same time I felt there was an opportunity to join a strong international research center and also to help the structure growing at my own level and having scientific success. After almost 6 months in CRP Santé, I feel like I have always worked here. My new colleagues did everything possible to integrate me to the team and the projects I am in charge of are challenging and exciting.

CRP-Santé opens opportunities for impacting science and society in a culturally diverse work environment. Luxembourg is a remarkably cross-cultural society that displays a strong confidence in its identities and economic standing.

As researchers we are driven by the idea of improving the life of patients through discoveries at the intersection between the biological, clinical and computing sciences. Scientific and societal challenges compel me daily to develop my career purpose and independence, within CRP-Santé and the profession at large. Our institute is committed to continuing learning and to the enhancement of our international competitive edge. This offers possibilities that can be hard to resist.

My experience at CRP-santé has been and still is an overwhelming journey since the day one. CRP-Santé has a very open work culture and is a flat organization, where anybody can approach any one with their ideas and issues. To be a researcher at the CRP-Santé is more to me than a job. It’s passion, it's a journey, an experience. There's so much to explore here - even about yourself - that every day is a new day. People, who vie for a challenging work place, enjoyable work environment and quest for success, shall look forward to be the part of the CRP-Santé Team.  I can sincerely say that this organization is a place where I can succeed in accomplishing both my short and long term goals that I have set forth in my career.

“Working in a multidisciplinary team is enriching” Andrea says. “This is one of the assets along with its leading position in biomedical research in Luxembourg that convinced me to join CRP-Santé”.

Andrea comes from Switzerland and is a trained pharmacist holding a PhD in Life Science. Andrea adds: “In my last professional positions, I gained experience in clinical trial management, more specifically in clinical research on tropical diseases in developing countries.

Conducting trials in poor resource settings is a real challenge and overcoming hurdles was a day-to-day activity”. Andrea explains: “Joining CRP-Santé in a dynamic team allows me to continue developing my skills and discovering new topics of research such as epidemiology and public health”.

Since September 2011, Andrea is project leader for the National Health Survey of Luxembourg. “Collecting information in order to assess the general health of the Luxembourgish population, the relation to risk factors such as obesity, smoking and pollution or to socio-economic inequalities is really exciting” concludes Andrea.
