2010 - 02 - 23 New book explores bioinformatics in the context of biomarker discovery

Francisco Azuaje, senior researcher, addresses the problem of discovering, interpreting and validating disease biomarkers in his new book Bioinformatics and Biomarker Discovery : "Omic" Data Analysis for Personalized Medicine.

Biomarkers are indicators of disease or treatment response that can be measured in biological samples, such as fluids and solid tissue. A crucial goal is to discover both powerful and clinically relevant biomarkers using relative large amounts of heterogeneous data and imperfect knowledge.

Based on more than ten years of independent research and teaching experience in the fields of computer science and biomedical informatics, Francisco Azuaje introduces fundamental and advanced concepts, techniques and applications required in biomarker discovery research. Chapter topics also include research principles and methods for assessing limitations, strengths and challenges in biomarker studies, as well as problems and advances relevant to the emerging area of systems biomedicine.
