The Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Oncology combines two complementary axes with 1) the study of anti-cancer activities of medicinal plant compounds and 2) the deciphering of actin-based molecular mechanisms implicated in tumorigenesis and metastasis.
Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Oncology
The Laboratory, which is affiliated with the Doctoral School "Life and Health Sciences" of the University of Strasbourg, is headed by Dr. André Steinmetz. Dr. Steinmetz obtained his Doctoral degree from the University of Strasbourg and held a Research Director position at CNRS (France) before he moved to Luxembourg in 2006. His areas of expertise are plant biochemistry, as well as molecular and cellular biology. He presently supervises (together with Dr. Wang Ning) the team working on anticancer (and antiviral) compounds from medicinal plants. Research on actin cytoskeleton and cancer is supervised by Dr. Clément Thomas who also obtained his PhD and "Habilitation à Diriger les Recherches" from the University of Strasbourg. Dr. Steinmetz is Member of the Review Panel of Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) and Initial Training Networks (ITN), Chair of the Marie Curie Individual Fellowships [Career Restart (CAR) Panel], and Coordinator of the IRSES Project TCMCANCER with the University of Bergen (Norway), the Modern Research Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine (MRCTCM, Second Military Medical Univesity Shanghai), and the Institute of Medicinal Plant Development (IMPLAD, Peking Union Medical University) as partners.
The Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Oncology (formerly Plant Molecular Biology) joined the Oncology Department in 2012 following a shift from plant research towards cancer-oriented research.
The Plant Molecular Biology Unit was created in 2005 following André Steinmetz's move from the Institute of Plant Molecular Biology in Strasbourg (France) to CRP-Santé. Current research is on two topics: (i) proteins that control the structure and dynamics of the plant actin cytoskeleton; (ii) novel bioactive components from Chinese medicinal plants. The latter research is carried out in collaboration with a research team for the University of Bergen (Norway) and with two Chinese laboratories: one from Shanghai (MRCTCM-SMMU) and one from Beijing (IMPLAD-PUMC). It is partly funded by the International Research Staff Exchange Scheme of FP7 of the European Commission.
The laboratory is affiliated with the Doctoral School "Life Sciences and Health" of the University of Strasbourg (France).
