The general aim of the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory is to study the impact of movement, training and sports, as well as inactivity on healthy and injured or ill individuals to provide decisive information for prevention, therapy, rehabilitation and sports.
ACTIVITIES
A major focus of our research activities is on epidemiology of sports injuries. We have developed an original sports injury surveillance system based on information technology. This system holds track of the athlete’s overall training characteristics and injury risk. It allows for a close real-time follow-up of the athlete based on objective risk indicators, as well as a complete description of the sports injury problem. We are applying this approach in various sport contexts, thus providing invaluable information for trainers, coaches, physiotherapists, medical doctors and decision makers to optimize the training load, orient prevention initiatives and safeguard the athlete’s health.
The safe return to an active lifestyle or sports after a serious injury or surgery is not always well defined. The scientific literature is scarce on objective return-to-play criteria, which requires a precise evaluation of the patient’s functional performance. Our group works in close collaboration with clinicians to develop and validate new evaluation tools and therapeutic procedures to optimize rehabilitation and improve diagnosis of pathologies of the musculo-skeletal system.
