Scope

Our fields of interest range from basic research to contract R&D for the diagnostic and vaccine industry.

  • Immunology and genetic/antigenetic diversity of old and new emerging viruses: relevance for detection, vaccination, pathogenicity, drug resistance, development of new treatment strategies
  • Development of immune-preventive strategies against infectious agents and against environmental risk factors, such as carcinogens.
  • Crosstalk between the immune system and the neuroendocrine system in particular under stress: gene structure, the transcriptional and translational regulation of nuclear receptors, such as the glucocorticoid receptor as the main stress response mediator.
  • Perinatal programming and epigenetics of the immune system.
  • Proteomics studies using 2D DIGE technology paired with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and LC-MS in the above areas and other fields in collaboration.

AFRICA, ASIA AND NEW INDEPENDENT STATES (NIS)

‹ Back

The Department of Immunology has many collaborations with research and surveillance laboratories in Europe, Africa, Asia and the New Independent States (i.e. the former Soviet Republics). Joint research projects with qualified laboratories in selected countries target important public health problems caused by infectious agents. In addition to generating answers to specific health problems, projects have an important training aspect for students and staff of the partner laboratory. During the project the scientific and technical capabilities of the partner laboratory are to be improved and new techniques should be implemented.

Thus the project may include the following components

  • Joint research in public health of infectious diseases
  • Training of staff and students of the participating laboratories
  • Upgrading of laboratory facilities
  • Implementation of new protocols and technologies

Students and staff have been trained in the field of laboratory surveillance of both human and veterinary viruses from partner institutions. The training includes modern techniques of virology, immunology and molecular biology depending on the particular training needs of the laboratory staff: ELISA, virus detection PCRs, sequencing, cloning and expression systems, phylogenetic analysis or other techniques available in the Department of Immunology (see technologies). Universities, hospitals, laboratories and other public health institutions from the following countries have participated in the program:
