Scope

Our fields of interest range from basic research to contract R&D for the diagnostic and vaccine industry.

  • Immunology and genetic/antigenetic diversity of old and new emerging viruses: relevance for detection, vaccination, pathogenicity, drug resistance, development of new treatment strategies
  • Development of immune-preventive strategies against infectious agents and against environmental risk factors, such as carcinogens.
  • Crosstalk between the immune system and the neuroendocrine system in particular under stress: gene structure, the transcriptional and translational regulation of nuclear receptors, such as the glucocorticoid receptor as the main stress response mediator.
  • Perinatal programming and epigenetics of the immune system.
  • Proteomics studies using 2D DIGE technology paired with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and LC-MS in the above areas and other fields in collaboration.

TEACHING AND TRAINING

‹ Back

The students are trained in the department and obtain their degree from a foreign university. In 2003, the Head of the department was nominated to the Chair of Immunology of the University of Trier and Associate Professor of the University of Saarland, from 1995-2003 the HOD was Associate Professor at the University of Tübingen. In 2002 the department of Immunology became associated with the Graduate School of Biology and Environmental Sciences (BIOSE) of the University of Nancy. The PhD students of the department enroll predominantly in Trier, Nancy and Homburg/Saarbrücken. The department of immunology also serves as a very active WHO training center. The European Summer School of the department hosts an increasing number of students from European universities for 2-4 months research training periods. In 2009 the start of the 50th doctoral student was celebrated with a scientific symposium with the Nobel Laureate Professor Harald zur Hausen as a guest speaker.
