Overview
The “Centre de Recherche Public de la Santé” (Public Research Centre for Health), short « CRP-Santé » is the leading Luxembourg public organisation performing basic, pre-clinical and clinical research in biomedicine and healthcare. CRP-Santé has been founded based on the first Luxembourg law on research and development (R&D) dated April 18, 1988.
In line with the major health challenges defined at European (DG-Sanco) and national levels (National Health Plan 2006/2007), CRP-Santé's mission is to generate knowledge on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of diseases with large impact on public health (i.e. clinically orientated biomedical research), and to perform epidemiological surveillance of these diseases and research on related health determinants in the population. As a consequence, CRP-Santé positions itself strategically at the interface of laboratory, clinical and public health research.
The medium term vision of CRP-Santé is to become a leading actor in biomedical research at an international level and the major national source of health related information for Luxembourg and European public health authorities.
CRP-Santé’s research activities are developed within the following research departments:
- Virology, Allergology and Immunity
- Immunology
- Oncology
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Public Health
- Clinical and epidemiological investigations
CRP-Santé considers human health as a fundamental good that need to be preserved. For that reason, CRP-Santé aims at applying biomedical research to serve the development of mankind and carrying out research projects with high ethical standards and scientific honesty while optimising the use of public funds. The organisation fosters the personal development of its employees by guaranteeing intellectual freedom as a source of creativity and innovation.
CRP-Santé has 200 scientific and 50 support staff, which performed in 2008 more than 100 research projects and published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers. Its yearly budget is currently around 25 million Euros, increasing by an average of 30% per year.
CRP-Santé actively interacts with national research partners (i.e. hospitals, the life sciences unit of the University of Luxembourg, the upcoming Center for Systems Biology (CSBL), the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg (IBBL) and other CRPs). Among multiple international collaborations, the most relevant in the context of our current proposal are the partnerships with TGen Foundation in Phoenix, Arizona (www.tgen.org) and with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington (www.fhcrc.org).
CRP-Santé is a young research organisation with highly qualified personnel working in multidisciplinary teams with strong integration of laboratory, clinical and
public health research. CRP-Santé’s research focus is on health topics with high impact on European population. The research units have state-of-the-art equipment in emerging fields of biomedical research and increasingly develop a market orientation aiming at commercial and clinical valorisation.
